Jan Vinita White, PhD, is a gerontologist, consultant, aging authority, writer, speaker, and researcher on the biological, psychological, and social issues of health and aging. Since 2007, Dr. White has been advancing this conversation through her blog post, which has attracted a global following. The pandemic ended her weekly live television segment, popular in the Tennessee Valley for seventeen years. Dr. White provides comprehensive aging consulting services to corporations, start-ups, and healthcare professionals. She is engaged weekly with the International Federation on Aging and a frequent subject matter contributor to ResearchGate. Gerontology is the study of aging across the lifespan from a biological, psychological, and social lens. Is aging a disease? No: Aging is universal across all species. Most people are unaware that aging begins in the womb. The health of the mother plays an important role in how her baby ages. Optimum nutrition during pregnancy and maintaining a healthy diet over the lifespan is essential for healthy aging outcomes.
Most gerontologists are academics and researchers. They are subject matter experts. Some work as coaches and counselors and help individuals and families with problems and issues related to aging. Gerontologists typically have PhD degrees, as they are not medical doctors. There is no credentialing or licensure in gerontology. Therefore, it is essential that potential clients check credentials before hiring one.
Researchers do not know the cause of Alzheimer's. Therefore, a cure or preventive remains unknown. Older adults and their families are hyper aware of every lost key. But 95% of older adults do not get Alzheimer's. There is no magic pill or diet to prevent aging. Remaining healthy into old age doesn't require wealth. The research shows that loving others and having good people around you results in aging well. Second, everything in moderation. Third, exercise and stay active.
